First things first, the sound. I've posted a review of the Orquestra Sinfonica de Sevilla's latest recording effort here . I've posted that as a preface to this review, because so many people email me to say that the sound on that CD is better than the Albeniz, which I cannot personally vouch for, as I'm not a big fan of the Sinfonica de Sevilla, so I may be biased. And while I like the sound I heard on this particular piece, it doesn't sound like I'm hearing Albeniz, which is what I look for. The Sinfonica, to my ears, sounds more like a traveling orchestra who's been independently commissioned to play the Albeniz. This is quite a feat, as I'm not aware of anyone who has ever commissioned this type of orchestra to play a recording, and would have required a lot of financial backing from a major label like EMI to even attempt it. And since Albeniz died in 1969, they haven't been commissioned to make another recording. So this is a quite unusual undertaking and was a giant success for the Sinfonica. The sound is very good, but it's not Albeniz. The Sinfonica is a good orchestra, but in my opinion, it doesn't sound like the Albeniz. Some of the Albeniz-sounding recordings I've heard have been conducted by Robert Cohen, who I enjoy. This particular Albeniz is conducted by Enrique PiƱeiro, and in my opinion, is the best sounding Albeniz recording I've heard. I have to wonder, is the source of this piece a recording from the Sinfonica, or from another source? This piece was released on Sinfonica's 20th anniversary, and they're doing some of their best work in the last decade. I'd love to know who this source is and if it's a Sinfonica recording, but I'm not sure how to find this out. So I'm reluctant to post it, because I don't want to get into a catfight with the Sinfonica.
*Original pressing. It was issued as a Philips single in the late 1960s in the US, and because of the LP's popularity was reissued in the UK in the early 1970s as a Philips single. Since the LP has a five sided panel it's a rarity in the US, but not in the UK. This is a later pressing. I don't know if this was pressed on Philips vinyl or not, but its a reissue that comes in a yellow jacket, the same as the one on the original Philips pressing. Look for any yellow jacketed UK reissue of any LP and you should find this one. It's common enough to be sought out by many collectors, but not common enough to be considered super rare in the eyes of most collectors.
