The most common form of DVD-Video is the DVD-ROM, a standardized physical disc format defined in the ISO 9660 standard . DVD-Video discs use a region code, e.g. region 2 or region 4. The region code indicates for which countries the DVD-Video medium may be played on legally. Different regions may have different handling of language subtitles, closed captioning, and other DVD-Video features. The region codes are also important for DVD-Video players. Players are legally required to operate only in the one region they were built for. When unboxed the DVD-Video medium is inserted into the player and is handled as a medium for region 2, and on that region it will play back DVDs from region 2. Any older or newer discs will not play back in the player. DVD-Video players generally also have a menu system that allows the user to select the region. Region 2 DVDs are the most common and are the easiest to obtain. Region 4 DVDs are the same DVD-ROM media, but region-locked to the country of the DVD player. Region 4 DVDs played on region 2 DVD players are handled as region 2 discs, and region 4 discs on region 4 DVD players are handled as region 4 discs.
Region locking was introduced by Sony as one of the features of the format in 1997 to try to prevent the use of DVDs in other countries than those where the owner bought the disc. DVD-Video players can optionally be region-locked to prevent the use of discs from other regions. The DVD-Video protection system includes a region code in the DVD-Video standard. The region code is stored on the disc, and a DVD player with a region code of 2, for example, will only read that code and no other. DVD-Video discs are designed to be region 2 only, but the DVD-Video player format allows region 6. The DVD-Video player sends the region code of the region number of the player to the DVD drive to determine whether the DVD can be played back. Many DVD players assume that if the DVD is region 6, it must be region 2. It is possible to make a region 6 DVD player (there are a few) but it is very expensive.
Exception raised if no CGMS-A signal was detected in the video stream or if the encoded data was unknown. This is a new way to stop recordings that was introduced in DVD-VR and applies only to DVD-VR discs.
3) XDSThe name of this field comes from the fact that it was originally called Extra Data Service (XDS). It is not related to the X-D-S standard, which is used for sound tracks. The XDS service is used for providing data to the DVD player. It is used to provide the following to players:
Some applications, such as Java, require that the application directories and libraries are updated to a newer version before the user can update. However, there are some applications that are not explicitly API-specific, such as the X Window System, the X server source code, are automatically updated as required.
