In the last month I shared some fun and practical ways to use Google App maker with your students. This month I want to share some great web based resources. I tried to cover it all from reading and writing to science and math. These sites are broken down into a few categories. You may want to be sure to link your students to the resource that they are most interested in using. Some of these sites are free and some require a small fee to access certain features. Most sites offer a free trial for students.
In this communication, we present the development of an ultrasonic technology for evaluating the bearing-failure condition of ceramic bearings in total knee and hip prostheses. Utilization of this technology may be able to provide more information on the bearing condition of the implant, and may be useful for material and design modification of the bearings. The ultrasonic technology was developed by Mechanical Technology, Inc., Latham, New York, and was based on research into Skylab's gyroscope bearings. It has two functions: (1) ultrasonic vibration diagnosis of bearing failure, and (2) bearing vibration measurement.
The first function is based on vibration analysis using non-contact and non-invasive ultrasonic imaging technology. The second function is a miniature vibration-monitoring system for continuous monitoring of material and structural vibrations of the bearing. The principle of this system is that the ultrasonic beams that pass through the specimen will exhibit attenuation due to mechanical vibration of the specimen. Transmission of vibration to the probe is detected by a piezoelectric ceramic transducer, which converts the vibration into an electrical signal that is recorded for later analysis.
The basic design of the Ultraprobe 2000 is based on knowledge gained from the Skylab gyroscope bearings, which had failed many times, but without any loss of an Orbiter. The experimental system (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) was capable of detecting bearing failure as a change in the ultrasonic signal. It was necessary to create a similar system in a compact form, to be used on the Shuttle. 827ec27edc
