Finn and Jake chase a Fire Newt after he steals boots, similar to what Jake did in City of Thieves. They say that if newts steal boots, the penalty is \"poots on newts.\" When Jake decides to fight the Newt by \"pooting\" on it, he chases it into the ocean, but when Finn tries to catch up with Jake, Finn backs up from the waves and freaks out. Suddenly, his bellybutton gurgles and out comes a dark, evil cloud-like entity called the Fear Feaster, who explains he is the manifestation of Finn's ocean fear and tells him that he can never be a hero if he cannot overcome his fear. After the Fire Newt is defeated, Jake goes back on land and Finn tells Jake that he thinks he is afraid of the ocean, and wants Jake's help to overcome his fear. Jake decides to help and Finn with his fear. When Jake moves Finn's feet to help him get into the ocean, Finn jumps on Jake's head and yells at him to bring back on land. Jake decides to resume it tomorrow. Finn wants to restart now, but overreacts over one tiny drop from one of the waves, and Finn agrees on Jake's decision.
The next day, Jake wakes Finn up and reveals that he moved Finn's room into the ocean with a \"three-step plan\" to help overcome his fear. As Finn begins to panic, Jake reveals he has contained Finn by tying him up in his sleeping bag. Finn tries to calm down, but when Jake dunks Finn's head into the ocean with his jowl, Finn finally breaks free and jumps on Jake, then beats him up. Finn uses Jake's ears as sails to get to a ruined building, and Jake decides to give up, as he is sick of Finn always beating him up whenever he gets too terrified. Jake decides to help Finn one more time, but makes Finn promise not to beat him up anymore and to only speak in rhymes. Jake brings a submarine (which he refers to as a \"sea cucumber\") and he and Finn both go down into the depths of the ocean with it. Finn is scared at first, but when Jake tells him to open up his eyes, he sees the true beauty of the ocean, but when Jake tries to dive into a black abyss, Finn breaks his promise, and goes nuts tying to make the controls go to the surface while beating up Jake. He makes a missile shoot from the submarine, which hits a building. It crashes down on the submarine and causes a hull breach. Finn then puts on his diving suit and pulls the emergency cord, making him float up back to the top of the ocean, but Jake was knocked unconscious during the incident and sinks to the bottom. The Fear Feaster arrives and tells Finn that he cannot overcome his fear, and now Jake is going to die. Since Finn cannot handle being in the ocean awake, Finn knocks himself out and sinks to the bottom of the ocean, dragging Fear Feaster with him.
Finn reaches the bottom and wakes up after Shrimp clink on his helmet. When he wakes Jake up, Jake tells Finn they are at the bottom of the ocean. Finn screams and tries to pull his emergency cord to get back up, but it will not work twice, and Jake decides to pull his to help him and Finn get back on land. Jake congratulates Finn on conquering his fear, but Fear Feaster shows up again and tells Finn he will never be a hero if he is scared of the ocean. Suddenly, a limo appears and Three Wise Men come out of it, telling Finn that Fear Feaster is wrong and Finn truly is a hero. The Wise Men and Fear Feaster go back inside Finn, he and Jake then celebrate over Finn's victory.
Finn and Jake were chasing a Newt for stealing a pair of boots. Making rhymes about the Newt, Jake followed the the Newt into the ocean. Finn, on the other hand, was about to do the same, but hesitated by the look of the water. Finn calls out to Jake \"I'll poot on that Newt, as soon as I'm bare foot!\", and takes of his shoes, but he still is hesitant at going in to the ocean, and he doesn't.
The Fear Feaster is a malicious spirit that resides within Finn the Human in Adventure Time. He is a manifestation of Finn's fear of the ocean and has made two major appearances in the series, tormenting Finn when the young hero has been forced to face the sea.
Finn's first encounter with the Fear Feaster occurs in the Season 1 episode \"Ocean of Fear\". When Finn and Jake harass a giant newt and chase it onto the beach, Finn finds himself paralysed with fear as he nears the sea, which is when the Fear Feaster emerges from his bellybutton. The Feaster taunts Finn, telling him that he is not a true hero and that he is merely a coward. Finn is determined to prove the Feaster wrong and asks Jake to help him overcome his fear of the ocean. After a string of mishaps caused by Finn succumbing to panic, Jake becomes stranded at the bottom of the ocean. Refusing to let his fear stop him from saving Jake, Finn knocks himself out and sinks to the ocean floor to retrieve Jake. Jake is still alive and well in his scuba suit and uses his emergency cord to inflate his suit, carrying him and Finn back to the surface. The Fear Feaster still mocks Finn because he did not overcome his fear and just sank to the ocean floor unconscious. However, the Three Wise Men then appear before Finn and tell him that he is indeed a great hero, and that the mark of a true hero is his flaw. His confidence restored, Finn banishes the Fear Feaster back into his bellybutton. The Feaster would not appear again until the Season 5 episode \"Billy's Bucket List\".
Finn decides to complete a bucket list left behind by his former idol Billy, but the last remaining item on the list is to merely lie on his back in the ocean and float. Reluctantly, Finn heads to the beach and the Fear Feaster emerges from his guts once more to mock the young human's phobia. Using a wooden plank, Finn knocks himself out and floats on the surface of the water. While unconscious, he experiences a strange dream. After waking up, he finds the Feaster gloating over him. The Grass Sword wrapped around Finn's arm unfurls of its own accord and slices through the Fear Feaster, severing him from Finn and destroying him once and for all. With the Feaster's demise, Finn finds that he is no longer afraid of the ocean.
The Fear Feaster is utterly malicious and incessantly mocks Finn's fear of the ocean, taking great pleasure from the terror and doubt that Finn experiences. He is also very sarcastic and dismisses any encouraging words spoken by Finn or others.
The Fear Feaster appears whenever Finn is forced to approach the ocean. Each time he appears, he constantly laughs and taunts Finn, telling him that he is weak and unheroic. However, the Feaster has no real power over Finn or anything else; his attempts to manipulate Finn are merely a psychological manifestation of Finn's own phobia.
In the midst of their travels across the sea, the Searchers are attacked by an army of Zillas, including the largest one, Gooji. Golem refuses to fight for fear of falling in the water at first, but when Holly is captured, he races to help her.
This episode contains examples of: Berserk Button: Gooji threatening Holly is what prompts Golem to act. Did Not Think This Through: See Sink or Swim Mentor. Sink or Swim Mentor: Horn attempts to help Golem get over his fear of water by tossing him into the ocean. Being made of stone, Golem just sinks, has to be saved, and is even more afraid than ever.
The two groups have no choice but to stay on the platform for the night. They wake up the next day and all are starving. Everyone immediately thinks of the Magikarp as their first source of food, Meowth attempts to bite it but ends up breaking his fangs, as Magikarp is, according to Misty, only scales and bones. At this point, James is so frustrated with his Pokémon that he kicks it into the ocean. The Magikarp begins to glow as it evolves into a Gyarados. Ash checks his Pokédex as James attempts to reclaim his role as the Pokémon's master, but is too scared of it. Misty sends out Goldeen, Staryu and Starmie. Brock thinks she will battle it, but she only plans to run away, with the Water Pokémon pulling the raft as everyone else attempts to row. Gyarados begins to pursue them, but suddenly stops. They think it is tired, but Misty remembers sailor stories about Gyarados's Dragon Rage attack. The waves pick up as four more Gyarados appear. They swim in a circle, forming a powerful water cyclone. The Gyarados advance towards the raft. Brock urges everyone to flee again, but Misty says that nobody has ever survived the attack before. Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket try to stay together, but become separated by the water spout's strong vortex.
